They keep wandering and chatting for a while, but Rachel just listens for most of it. M: "Are we leaving you out Rachel?"
R: "No, I'm fine."
L: "We are leaving you out."
R: "No you're not, I'm learning."
M: "But we're not involving you."
R: "It's fine, really. I don't mind. You'd have to explain some of the stuff you're talking about anyway."
M: "So ask. If you want to learn, then ask."
R: "Ok, what's Sabre and why is it so bad?"
M: "Ah. Sabre is a vampire, but he's a rogue. He's a killer, the only monster of all of us as far as we know. He changed so much his name changed, he was Moonshadow before. Raven lost a fight, and hadn't taught him what we can do when we are injured. The woman who attacked him was young at the time, so she couldn't keep track of what she was doing while defending her territory. When Raven fell, Moonshadow's heart broke. He ran, and he had to hide all day. The woman realised what she'd done as soon as Moonshadow had gone so she cared for Raven that day. He found him the next night but that broke his mind. He had already thought that his lover was dead, so to see him alive broke him. He wandered for a few nights, and he was very weak when he found his new name. He had gone into a museum just as it closed to hide, and he must have collapsed or hidden near the dinosaur bones, because the guard's body was found in front of the sabre tooth skeleton."
R: "He killed?"
M: "Yeah. Early on in the night too. The papers said it looked like a big cat had gotten in there an-"
L: "It wasn't pretty."
M: "No, it wasn't pretty. Lana looks over to the other path and slows down a little bit. "What is it?" Mako steps close to her and they both go off the path. Glade steps close to Rachel and stands between her and the other path. R: "What's going on?"
G: "Quiet."
"Why?"
"Shut up."
Lana and Mako go to look at the group on the other path. They're far enough away for them to not see Glade and Rachel, but it they move off the path then they will see them. They can both smell blood on them, not much, but it's fresh. Mako goes across the path so they can see the group from two angles. The group don't see them, but they do start to wander off the path. Lana tells Glade that he needs to move Rachel away from them, fast.
G: "Move, that way. That group we saw earlier are moving this way." Rachel does what she's told without question and he moves her off the path and behind some tall plants. Lana and Mako watch carefully from between the group and Glade. The group goes straight across the path so they come out of the shadows as a group with Rachel in the middle. Most of them are drunk, so they can't talk their way out easily. This group are killers. Glade listens carefully to Rachel's heart so he knows if she's likely to fall. Mako and Lana growl faintly and don't listen to what they're saying. L: "We don't mean any harm. You didn't see us, we didn't see you." They say about Rachel being hidden behind them and they let their eyes glow a bit. Some of them decide that it's not a good idea and one gets hit for it. They all let their eyes glow bright and they step forward. A lot of them back off, and two run. One brings out a knife and asks for a fight, saying that he can't be beaten, he's already killed, if they kill him the rest of the group will kill them and they can't beat the whole group. Glade hears Rachel's heart flicker, just like before, and catches her before she falls far. They all use the same ability on the man to make him sleep, and he falls straight away. Most of the remaining group run away, but two stay, both with a knife. Lana uses a different ability to hypnotise the one closer to her, and Mako copies her. Both men put down their knife and walk away calmly and seem to wake up when they've walked away far enough. Then they run. One stumbles but runs fine. Lana goes to the man they made sleep to check him. M: "Ambulance?" Lana nods.
G: "Rachel needs it too."
L: "Her heart?"
G: "Yes. She will be well when she wakes."
M: "How do we explain him?"
L: "Say he ran out of the bushes and tripped, and he surprised Rachel so much that she fainted." He nods and calls from his mobile. They don't have to wait long, they're not that far from the hospital. They sit against the ambulance to wait for them to be ready to go. Rachel had already woken up by the time they got there. Glade is holding her till she is calmer because she got so stressed from the group that she panicked when she woke up. One of the paramedics comes out from the back and tells them that he's good to move, but the police might want to talk to them, and Rachel is going to be fine once he gets some sleep. Mako goes to the hospital with the guy and Lana goes back to Glade's home. Rachel falls asleep in the taxi, so he puts her on the bed in the spare room while Lana settles on the sofa.
She wakes up enough to know where she is but goes back to sleep for the night. He stayed with her till she woke up the first time, but went away to his own rest after than. L: "How is she?"
G: "Sleeping. The man?"
"Mako showed me when the police turned up. He was wanted for something and they thanked Mako for making the call. His name is Lucas Jenkins for now so remember that. Mine is Lucy Jenkins, his sister. I remembered yours and so did Mako. He also gave them your number so they can call us and we can talk to him."
"Has he told them about the sun."
"Yeah, he said we have that blister in minutes thing and that once we get used to going out at night our body clock changes so we sleep in the day."
"As we do."
"Yeah. I just hope they don't want any more from us."
"I doubt that they will. We called an ambulance for a wanted man, so we are the heroes."
"That's accurate." She shuts her eyes for a few seconds then nods. "They're on their way here now to talk to us." He nods and pulls the door to the spare room nearly closed so that the police don't wake her. G: "Victor."
"Jacob."
M: "You know each other?"
G: "This is not the first time something like this has happened."
M: "You mean you caught someone?"
"He neutralised three youths on their way out the door after holding up the corner shop."
M: "Nice one." Glade and Victor go into Glade's room to talk because the statement needs to be done without the other's hearing it.
"What happened this time?"
G: "The young man ran across the path and tripped. He scared my friend so much she fainted. We called an ambulance for them both. They took the man. My friend woke up before they arrived and they told us that as I had caught her before she hit the ground, and that she has a medical reason for it, they did not need to check her."
"Ok. That should be enough from you. Where's this friend you mentioned?"
G: "This way." He leads Victor to the door and opens, it to show him that Rachel is still sleeping.
V: "Right, I'll come back later. Have you still got my card?"
G: "Yes. I do still have it."
M: "Do you need a statement from us?"
"Yeah I do but as you lot are the heroes it can wait a while."
L: "Why not get it out the way?"
V: "Fine. Ladies first?"
L: "Fair enough." They go into Glade's room and she says nearly the same as Glade did. Then Mako does the same, and by the time they're all done Rachel has woken up. Glade goes in to tell her what's going on, and lets Victor in to talk to her. V: "Could you tell me what happened miss?"
R: "Yeah, sure." She stops and stays still. Don't panic. He won't believe the truth. The man ran across the path. R: "Um, he ran across the path." He tripped. You fainted. "I saw him trip, but he scared me, and I fainted. I've got a heart murmur, when I get too scared it makes me faint." Thank you. "Next thing I remember I woke up and there were paramedics checking me and they had the guy in the back."
V: "Thank you." He goes out and Glade looks in.
G: "I fixed the window so that if you need to stay here you can let light in."
R: "Why?"
G: "You can stay as long as you need to."
"Yeah, but why be so nice?"
"I am always nice."
"You still feel bad about what happened?"
He looks away for a couple of seconds before replying. "Yes. I should have been more careful."
