Thoughts on US gun law and frequent mass shootings

In the UK the gas supply used to be lethal. People could kill themselves easily and quickly by just opening the oven and putting their head in it (which is still shown in cartoons sometimes). When the gas supply was changed to a non-lethal mix, suicide rates dropped dramatically, and stayed there forever. I think that the same thing could happen with guns. If people didn't have one in the house they wouldn't be able to pick it up at the moment they were angry enough to do something stupid. Maybe having a storage facility would be enough, then it would be stored safely, they would still have access to it, they know that if their house is broken in to they wont lose it, they know their kids can't get to it, they know they can't lose it, they just can't shoot someone who annoyed them in the next 5 minutes.
